Man In Court For Allegedly Stealing Girlfriend's Money

The police in Lagos on Friday docked a 33-year-old man, Victor Agyel, for allegedly stealing his girlfriend's Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card and using it to withdraw her money.

Agyel, who resides at Afprint compound, Isolo Expressway, Isolo, Lagos, appeared before an Oshodi Magistrates' Court in Lagos, on a count charge of stealing.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov.24, 2012 at No 2, Taiwo Koya St., Ilupeju, Lagos.

He said that the accused unlawfully used a stolen Eco Bank ATM card to withdraw N75, 000 from the bank account of his girlfriend, one Miss Nsidibe William, a housekeeper.

"The accused went to the complainant's house, took her ATM card without her consent, went to the ATM machine and withdrew all her money," he said.

Olatunde said that the accused knew the complainant's pin number because he always followed her to ATMs and assisted her to withdraw money anytime she needed it.

"The accused used to assist the complainant to withdraw money because she is an illiterate and does not know how to use the ATM machine," he said.

Olatunde said that the offence contravened Sections 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The section provides that if convicted of stealing, an accused is liable to three years imprisonment.

However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mr Akeem Fashola, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety and adjourned the case to May 16 for mention.
